Who can be a member of Canto Coro Inc?

Canto Coro is open to anyone who wants to sing.

When the choir is awarded large grants there are no membership fees. Otherwise, your fee helps the choir run. If you can’t pay (as much), speak to the committee about alternative arrangements.

There are no auditions.

You don’t have to be able to read music.

Existing members may know some of the season’s repertoire, but everyone is taught from scratch.

More male voices are always needed and female tenors are welcome.

What happens when I first become a member of the choir?

When you first join you will receive a membership pack containing: a black folder, pronunciation guide, details of membership rights and volunteering opportunities.

Each season, returning members receive new sheet music, translations and a practice CD when available.

What do my fees pay for?

Your fee pays for rehearsals, practice materials, a professional director, public liability insurance and hire costs for rehearsal and concert venues. We hope to also include musicians and other people to assist in making or recording performance. Busy volunteers find performances and manage and administer the choir.

Who manages the Choir?

Canto Coro Inc is incorporated under the Associations Act. Its committee is elected annually by choir members at the Annual General Meeting. The committee is composed of office bearers and general members. The Music Director has input into the committee. The committee administers funds and manages all aspects of the choir and its performances. Committee members are volunteers.

When do rehearsals start?

The first rehearsal is on Saturday April 9th.

On the first day we start at 2.30PM to allow people to register.

When are rehearsals?

Usually, the main rehearsal season runs from around the end of July or the start of August to the end of November. In 2016 rehearsals will commence in April, after renovations to the rehearsal venue are completed.

If we have gigs scheduled, we may also have a brief summer season in February-March.

We rehearse on Saturdays between 3-5PM.

Closer to performances we may have extra rehearsals (often Wednesday evenings).

Where are rehearsals?

Rehearsals are in the cohealth Collingwood Centre at 365 Hoddle St Collingwood, Victoria.

What happens at a rehearsal?

Rehearsals often follow this form:

-          Set up lobby

-          Physical and vocal warm-up

-          Tutorial with your voice part

-          Afternoon Tea followed by notices

-          Full choir rehearsal

-          Clear up lobby

-          (possible) Social gathering elsewhere

Dress rehearsals are in addition to the weekly Saturday rehearsal. The choir may be engaged to perform at festivals and community events during our rehearsal season as well.

What do you expect from me?

To ensure an enjoyable experience for all singers and high quality performances for our audiences, we ask you to arrive on time and to attend at least 80% of rehearsals.

To enable the choir to run, we ask you to pay any fees due either before or at the first rehearsal.

We suggest that you bring your own water bottle and a pencil to mark changes, dynamics, song form and so on. It’s also a good idea to bring along a small hand-held recording device to tape rehearsals.

Please let the Secretary know of any changes to your contact details or availability as soon as possible.

We encourage sections to arrange out of rehearsal time rehearsals amongst yourselves.

We strongly recommend that you sing along to your practice CD, at least, twice a week. More if possible.

If you need more or different help, if you want to volunteer or if you have an idea for a social event, we encourage you to talk with the committee.
